Spine Aid: Changing lives, one spine at a time

Spine Aid is a charity that provides free spinal surgery to disadvantaged patients in the developing world. Founded by Mr. Rai, a compassionate and caring surgeon, Spine Aid has helped hundreds of children and adults with spinal problems and disabilities.

Mr. Rai travels to Punjab, India twice a year to operate on children with spinal deformities and to provide medical care to many more patients. All money donated to Spine Aid directly funds patient treatment.

How Spine Aid began

Spine Aid was founded by Mr A S Rai ( Consultant Spinal Surgeon and ex-President of British Association Spinal Surgeons) in the United Kingdom. Mr Rai was inspired to start the charity after working with children and adults with spinal problems and disabilities at the CURE foundation hospital in Lusaka, Zambia and over last 10 years in Punjab, India.

In 2008, Mr Rai made his first trip to Zambia, where he operated on four children with severe spinal deformities. The operations were successful, and the children were able to leave the hospital walking and with a new outlook on life. Over last 10 tears he has been going twice yearly to India with teams of health professionals from UK and America (Standing Straight team) to provide life-changing surgery and care to many more children. However, there are still many more children who need help.

Mr Rai founded Spine Aid to help raise money for these children. The money donated to Spine Aid goes directly towards patient treatment, providing nutrition, transport, and medical equipment. Spine Aid has already raised over £75 000, which has helped to purchase an operating table, spinal equipment, spinal prosthesis and anaesthetic agents.
